Mae Nam is the northern part of Koh Samui and a 100% chill zone. According to Google, it’s for backpackers and budget travellers. Maybe it used to be, but now it’s just like any other colonized part of the island. Mae Nam pier is the entry point from Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, so this area is always busy, but you can find plenty of space and peace everywhere else.
DOING THINGS
The main activity is beaching. Whether you visit Maenam Beach or Bang Por Beach, it will give you the perfect golden sand and flat water experience. One thing to note, tho: low tide means really low and super hot water. Not refreshing at all, but the shore is still good for getting a nice tan.
If the local buzz is your thing, visit one of the afternoon markets (impossible to miss them along the way) and get some goodies.
However, the absolute highlight is Baan Massage. I’m always looking for an effective yet relaxing oil massage, and the ladies here are some of the best I’ve found in Thailand. After 60 minutes on the massage bed, your body feels light, as if floating on clouds. They’re also not expensive (compared to many other places), so I highly recommend them if you want to treat yourself.
SIGHTSEEING
The only attractions are the Tree Bridge Zipline and Tan Rua Waterfall. I have to admit the site is cute and photogenic.. but you should arrive at the right time (best in the morning, avoiding the afternoon peak). What you get here is an Instagram-stop bridge, a gorgeous view of the coastline, and an easy walk to the refreshing waterfall.
Besides this, you can find a well-damaged (half-dead, lol) Giant Octopus on Mae Nam beach. It’s creepy, and the wind blowing through it, creating a whistling sound, makes it even more creepy.
EAT IT ALL
First, I checked Google, but then I decided just to follow my food sense.
- Pizzeria Bellavita is the place to go if you crave authentic Italian pizza. The prices are a little higher than average, but it’s a quality treat for the hungry belly.
- Bao Bao Asian Eatery is for my bao lovers. They offer many combinations, the stuffed buns (savoury and sweet) are so tasty and juicy, and the atmosphere is cozy (also perfect for digital nomading).
- Hug Samui is more about the setting (the food is alright). It’s right on the beach, and nothing beats sitting in the shade, being productive, and then diving into the sea and sipping your fresh fruit juice.
WHERE IS THE BEST COFFEE?
Cafés, bars, and restaurants are next to each other, mostly facing the beach. You will surely find something that suits your interests. These are my favourites:
- The Garage Life has one of the best coffees on Samui, and the food is delicious, too. Small place, friendly girls, and did I mention the great coffee?!
- 4 Monkeys Cafe & Bar has the best beach bar atmosphere, whether you come for a coffee or cocktail, midday or evening. They also have live music, so it’s a perfect after-sunset spot.
